GTA 6 preload guide: how to preload on PS5 and Xbox

You can preload GTA 6 from local midnight on Thursday 12 November 2026, which is 00:00 GMT in the UK. That's a full week before launch on 19 November. Pre-order digitally, or redeem the code from a boxed copy, and the game will download so it's ready the moment it unlocks.

Live update: The preload date and time come from Rockstar. The download size hasn't been confirmed yet, so clear plenty of space in advance. It may not be listed until preload opens on 12 November. We'll add the official size here as soon as it's published. Last checked: 25 October 2026.

Before 12 November: a quick checklist

1. Pre-order on the right account. The game and any bonuses are tied to the account you buy it on.
2. Update your console to the latest system software.
3. Free up storage. The size isn't confirmed, so the more room you have, the better. See our GTA 6 storage guide.
4. Turn on automatic downloads (steps below) so the preload starts on its own while you sleep.
5. Leave the console in rest mode with the internet connected on the night of 11–12 November.

How to preload GTA 6 on PS5

Sony's own steps for pre-orders:

1. Pre-order GTA 6 on the PlayStation Store. You're charged straight away and it appears in your Game Library.
2. Go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates and switch on Auto-Download (and Auto-Install in Rest Mode).
3. Go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and switch on Stay Connected to the Internet.
4. From your games home, open Game Library and select GTA 6. You'll see a countdown timer.
5. Select the timer and make sure the content checkbox is ticked. That means auto-download is on.
6. Pop the console into rest mode. The preload should start once it opens at midnight on 12 November.

The PlayStation Store listing also says that auto-download needs Automatic Login and Auto Sign-In switched on on your PS5. It's worth checking before preload night.

If it hasn't started by the morning of 12 November: open GTA 6 in your Game Library and start the download by hand.

How to preload GTA 6 on Xbox Series X|S

Xbox supports pre-installing pre-ordered digital games:

1. Pre-order GTA 6 from the Microsoft Store on your console, the Xbox app or xbox.com.
2. On your console, open My games & apps, find GTA 6 and choose Install. It may show as ready to pre-install.
3. To keep it hands-off, make sure your console is set to keep games up to date and stays connected in sleep or standby. Menu names can vary slightly between Xbox system updates, so check against your console.
4. Not at home? You can start the install remotely from the Xbox mobile app or xbox.com, as long as your console has remote installs enabled.

Preloading a boxed (physical) copy

• There's no disc in the box. It's a download code, and Rockstar has confirmed that.
• Boxed copies are due from 12 November to support preloading.
• Redeem the code on your PlayStation or Xbox account as soon as you have it. Codes redeemed before launch start preloading from 12 November.
• Region matters on PlayStation. A UK-bought PlayStation code only works on a UK-registered account. Rockstar says Xbox codes aren't region-locked.

Common preload problems

• "It didn't start." Check the PS5 auto-download checkbox or the Xbox install queue, then start it by hand.
• "Not enough space." Move or delete other games (PS5 can move them to USB extended storage) or add an SSD. See our storage guide.
• "I bought it on the wrong account." Digital licences don't move between accounts, so contact the store's support.
• Day-one patch. Expect an update around launch. Its size isn't confirmed.
