The official GTA 6 download size hasn't been confirmed yet. As of 25 October 2026, Rockstar, PlayStation and Xbox haven't published it. What we do know is that everyone has to download the whole game, because even boxed copies are just a code. Preloading starts on 12 November, so free up as much space as you can now. If you're tight on room, an SSD upgrade is the fix.
Live update: We'll add the official PS5 and Xbox file sizes here as soon as they appear on the stores or the Rockstar Newswire. The stores don't list a size yet, and it may not appear until preload opens on 12 November. Last checked: 25 October 2026.
How big is the GTA 6 download?
| Status | |
|---|---|
| PS5 download size | Not yet confirmed |
| Xbox Series X|S download size | Not yet confirmed |
| Day-one patch size | Not yet confirmed |
| Disc in the box? | No, it's a download code only (confirmed) |
Be careful with numbers you see online. File sizes circulating on social media come from unofficial sources, not Rockstar. Fake "early copies" of GTA 6 have also been linked to malware, so don't download anything that isn't from the PlayStation Store or the Microsoft Store.
What is confirmed is that the world is big. Rockstar North's Rob Nelson has said the map is about twice the size of GTA 5's, and that his recent playthrough of the story plus some optional content took around 80 hours. It's sensible to plan for a large install, but we won't give a number until there's an official one.
How to make room on PS5
- Check your space: go to Settings > Storage.
- Park old PS5 games on a USB drive. You can move PS5 games to USB extended storage to free up internal space. You can't play PS5 games from USB, so you'll need to copy them back to play.
- Add an M.2 SSD for more space you can play from (Sony's requirements are below).
- Delete games you've finished. You can always download them again later.
How to make room on Xbox Series X|S
- Check your space: go to Settings > System > Storage devices.
- Move older games to a USB 3.1 drive. It can store Series X|S games, but it can't play games optimised for Series X|S.
- Add a Storage Expansion Card. It plugs into the back and plays Series X|S games at the same speed as the internal SSD.
- Series S owners: this matters most for you, because the Series S has the smallest internal drive.
Which SSD works for GTA 6?
PS5: M.2 NVMe SSD (Sony's official requirements)
- Interface: PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe (Key M). SATA M.2 drives aren't supported
- Capacity: 250GB to 8TB
- Sizes: 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110
- Speed: 5,500MB/s or faster sequential read recommended
- Cooling: a heatsink or heat-transfer sheet is required. A drive with a built-in heatsink is the easiest option
- Max size with heatsink: 25mm wide and 11.25mm thick
- Update your PS5 system software before you install it. The drive gets formatted on first use
For five heatsink drives that meet these rules, with UK prices we checked, see our best SSD for PS5 for GTA 6 guide.
Xbox Series X|S: Storage Expansion Card
- Plugs into the Storage Expansion port, with no screwdriver needed
- It's the only add-on storage that can play Series X|S-optimised games, and it matches the speed of the internal SSD
- The same card works in both Series X and Series S
Look for the Seagate Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S or the WD_BLACK C50 Storage Expansion Card.
Either console: cheap external USB storage for parking old games
Any USB external drive can store PS5 and Series X|S games, so you can park finished games there and copy them back later, which is quicker than downloading them again. They can't play PS5 or Series X|S games, though.
GTA 6 on PS5 Pro: what's confirmed and what isn't
| Status | |
|---|---|
| PS5 Pro Enhanced version | Confirmed (PlayStation Store label) |
| Rockstar says it "plays best on PlayStation 5" | Confirmed (Rockstar's site) |
| Frame rate on base PS5 | Rockstar North's Rob Nelson said in August 2026 that it runs at 30fps |
| 60fps / performance mode on any console | Not yet confirmed Rockstar said it was still to be determined, at launch or later |
| What the PS5 Pro enhancements actually are (resolution, frame rate, ray tracing) | Not yet confirmed |
| Xbox Series X vs Series S differences | Not yet confirmed |
What "PS5 Pro Enhanced" means in general: it's Sony's label for games that have been improved for the Pro in some way, such as better resolution, frame rate or ray tracing. It doesn't guarantee 60fps. Until Rockstar or Sony give specifics, we can't tell you what GTA 6 gets.
Digital Foundry looked at Rockstar's August footage and estimated it ran at native 1440p and around 30fps on a base PS5. That's an analysis of a trailer, not an official spec.
Should you buy a PS5 Pro for GTA 6?
Not yet. Wait until the Pro enhancements are confirmed. GTA 6 runs on every PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. We'll update this section the moment there's official detail.
Still to be confirmed
- Official download and install size on PS5 and Xbox
- Day-one patch size
- What the PS5 Pro enhancements are
- Whether there's a 60fps or performance mode, at launch or later
- Series S resolution and performance
Frequently asked questions
How big is GTA 6?
Not yet confirmed. Rockstar, PlayStation and Xbox haven't published a download or install size as of 25 October 2026. Figures circulating online are unofficial.
Will the boxed version save me download space?
No. The box holds a download code, not a disc, so everyone downloads the full game.
Can I play GTA 6 from a USB hard drive?
No. On PS5 you can store PS5 games on USB extended storage but not play them from it. On Xbox Series X|S, USB drives can store but not play Series X|S-optimised games. To play, use internal storage, a compatible PS5 M.2 SSD, or an Xbox Storage Expansion Card.
Which SSD do I need for PS5?
Sony requires a PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD (Key M), 250GB to 8TB, with a heatsink or heat-transfer sheet. 5,500MB/s or faster sequential read is recommended. SATA M.2 drives aren't supported.
What does PS5 Pro Enhanced mean for GTA 6?
The PlayStation Store confirms a PS5 Pro Enhanced version, but Rockstar and Sony haven't said what the enhancements are. Resolution, frame rate and ray-tracing details are not yet confirmed.
Does GTA 6 run at 60fps?
Not confirmed. In August 2026 Rockstar North's Rob Nelson said the game runs at 30fps and that whether a 60fps option arrives at launch or later still had to be determined.
Should I buy a PS5 Pro just for GTA 6?
We'd wait. Nothing specific about the Pro version has been confirmed yet.
